Question: What is "en prise"?
Q+A for beginners(and everyone else)

rychessmaster1: if you were to wake up tomorrow and know nothing about chess, then after learning the basics like how the pieces move, what pattern, concept, or motif would you first try to learn again? Would you try to first learn about square weaknesses? Would you first learn all the checkmating patterns you can? Would you train your tactical eye to spot forks? pins? skewers? You get the idea: What would you try and learn well first?
What happened

Is it better to have a decent attack and a weak defense, or a weak attack and a decent defense.
Depends on the position. Nearly all of my "big" games have been with Black, though.

Ok good to know! Another question I have is how to set up tactics in a game or is it not setting them up but rather noticing them?
One of Fischer's favorite sayings was that "Tactics flow from a superior position".
And one of the greatest masters of attack and combinations, Rudolf Spielmann, said this about Alekhine:
Spielmann was NOT a positional player.
The lesson to be learned from this is that you should not look for combinations and sacrifices until you have first gained the advantage by maneuver. Once your position is better, THEN start searching for the way to cash in your advantage.

Do you want to become NM or FM? What would it takes to become one without sacrificing college or current job?

Do you have time to play enough tournaments to get to 2200?
I understand. College students do have a chance. They have 2 months vacation to participate in Fide rated tournaments. If they failed this summer, there is next summer.

Read this legally free, online book by 1921-27 World Champion Jose Capablanca. It not the greatest book but it still very good and it's free! After you have read it you'll understand much more about the value of the pieces, opening principles, etc. It will allow you to understand where to go from there:

I also encourage you to look at some of the beginner instruction here or on YouTube and to go through some famous games - the reason for many of the moves are described.

I'm 19 years old and currently stuck at 1300ish rating on rapid chess. I've been practicing and doing tactics approximately 3 hours/day in total. How long is the ideal time to practice chess daily? and If I keep doing this how long do you think I can reach 1700+ rapid chess rating? sorry for bad english.
