Rating works backwards for me?

Lately I have started playing 45/45 time controls and weirdly enough it seems that I can beat stronger players easier than weaker ones (according to rating that is).

My stats are lately going so that average opponent when I win is 1205, when I draw it is 1056 and when I lose it is 988.

My own rating is a little over 1000 right now.

This is a little weird in my opinion. Maybe it is that I have a different mindset when I go into a game with a stronger opponent? I am kind of thinking I am probably going to lose, but let's try. Kind of like the no pressure underdog situation. And when I play against a weaker player I kind of feel the pressure of I should win this?

I know the sample size is very small if you only look at the last 7 days, but I seriously thought that like 200 points difference in rating meant a lot more than it seems to.

I’m the same way too lol

It happens sometimes. The higher rated player might feel overconfident and be more willing to play weird things which would give a chance to the lower rated player. They could also be having a bad day or just be starting their account so their rating is not yet indicative of their ability.

That has happened to me a lot.  I think with lower rated players I subconsciously have let my guard down.  With higher rated players, I am sometimes more careful and they may be too confident.

of course, it has worked the other way too where I get nervous playing a much higher rated player for the first time. I remember when I first hit the 500s, I resigned the first time I was set up with a 600 player!

Expectation plays into it for sure, but also 1000ish is a weird band in ratings due to people starting new accounts at 1000. Same happens at 1400 etc. It depends on how good people think they are when they join. If I'd joined thinking I was an expert, some 1800's would have sure gotten some easy wins...
