Ratings reset?

Is there a way to change my rating, currently at 400, so that if I play a human, I'll be more evenly matched?

I've been consistently beating the 1200 bot and just beat the 1300 bot three times in a row, with no help or takeovers. I seem to do better starting with white against the 1300. With the 1200 bot, it really doesn't matter.

I have not yet played any humans on chess.com.

Chess.com has me rated at 400 due to my misunderstanding of the registration process.

The weaker bots are highly overrated compared to humans of same rating. Beating 1 200 and 1 300 bots still doesn't mean that is your level. 1 200 bot is for instance significantly weaker than 1 000 rated human.

Even if your rating is not accurate, in the beginning you will win and lose more points, until the system is sure what is your real level. In other words, you will be at your own level soon enough.

But the only sure way to know your level is to play some games. Everything else is just speculation.

Really good to know. I did notice that the 1200 bot often seems to be ridiculously poor at predicting and countering my attacks. I've only been using Chess.com for a short time, basically in response to the chess app that comes native with Mac OS getting extremely good, even at the lowest settings. But I would be very surprised if my level is really anywhere close to 400.

The problem with these weaker bots is the way they play. Most of them can play some good moves, maybe even some moves a real 1 200 rated player wouldn't find, but then they leave the piece hanging out of the blue.

This is not how most humans play. Sometimes humans will leave pieces hanging without any reason, but mostly people far below 1 000 rated. People with 1 200 rating of course lose pieces, but in most cases, they have to be encouraged to do so. They mostly have to be pressured by a superior play.

This is why there are videos on YouTube where 1 500 rated people blunder pieces against titled players, while they don't do it often against theyr peers or weaker players.
Of course, I am talking about the situation where they have a lot of time to think, not some blitz game, but let's say 15|10 or longer.

So even 2 000 rated bots are still overrated, though not like 1 000 rated bots are. Highest level bots are another story however. happy.png

In any case, I advise you to play against other humans, not only because it is the only safe way to know your level, but it is way more fun than playing bots.
