The answer to this gotta be "no", I reckon, but just checking: Can my opponent's King take a piece of mine that's guarded by another piece of mine that's pinned to my King?

(Not really a total beginner; it's just that I don't think I've ever found myself in this particular situation before...)

You are correct. A king cannot be placed into the attack of another piece - even if that piece is pinned. In the below diagram, the Black king cannot take the White rook because the Queen is still guarding it.

I always think of it like this: if chess is about "capturing" the king, then whose king would be captured first? If Black takes the rook, then White would able to win the king first.

Yeah, I guess what you're describing is basically the inherent premise in anything "turn-based"... Never does it get as dramatic, though, as it does in chess happy.png
