Shock and rating

73 years old. Beginner. Took two years to get to 400. Emotional shock mid-December and since then I’m just downhill all the way. Has anyone else had this? Trauma then downhill? Any tips? My family says I’m the same mentally so I haven’t had a stroke or other catastrophic brain event. Serious question - does a shock affect your play, and any tips for recovery?

Of course it does. Even being just a little angry, upset, tired or even a little too happy can have a significant impact on how well you play.

This was also mentioned in Yasser Seirawan’s book ”Winning Chess Stategies”.

if you are worried about your rating, take a break or play unrated until you are feeling better again. But there is no real reason to worry about rating.

Take a breath, everything's fine 😃 maybe practice with a few puzzles daily, play a few unrated games and analyse wins and losses to better understand things. It's frustrating loosing rating, don't focus on rating, focus on enjoying the game. It's not right to feel down due to a ratings drop when you've been learning a couple of years, well done for sticking with it.dont be too hard on yourself. Constantly playing rated games to get rating back isn't the best way to improve or feel better.

I have actually had a Stroke 5 years ago. I do this to rebuild the memory loss and general age decline since I'm in my 50s. Yes. Trauma does play a part. Lost my older brother in August of 2022. Has been difficult. I've been very distracted obviously. Message me directly if ya wanna chat. Hang in there Brother
