For purposes of ratings and the like, is Stalemate equivalent to Draw?

What is stalemate

Yes. Stalemate is just a different kind of draw since your opponent has no legal move the game cannot continue.

Yes, I agree with fiziwig.  Stalemate is a draw and that means nobody wins.  In other words, a tie.

My question is whether a draw and stalemate influence rating identically.  I believe Fiz explicated.  Thanks all.

Yes the rating is identical but the rating points you get for a draw or stalemate changes depending on the rating of your opponent

Those two statements appear at odds.  "Rating is identical", "Points you get... changes depending on...".  Kindly explicate.

stalemate is equal to draw because it is a draw. points change depending on opponents rating, not stalemate/draw

The fact the points points change depending on opponents rating is orthogonal to my question, which relates strictly to the distinction, or lack thereof, between stalemate and draw.  Effect of rating change resulting from draw (stalemate) differs from that of win/loss strictly by magnitude.  Thanks again all.

a stalemate is one type of draw. so yes, they are identical from a points perspective.

Keep in mind that a draw does not mean no change to your rating. If you have a rating of 500 and get a draw with a grand master you will be awarded rating points for being able to hold your own against someone much stronger than you. By the same token, if you are the grand master and you get a draw with a 500 player you will lose rating points because you're supposed to be good enough that you can beat a 500 player and if you let him get a draw your rating takes a hit.

Yes
Stalemate is the exact same as a draw
You can consider it as a fancier way of saying draw

Stale mates just come out of no where if you aren't careful enough
