Hello. I'm a sub 1000 player and recently am attempting to utilize the puzzle feature. What's the best way to approach learning without getting discouraged?

Use a real board, and pieces.

Take your time.  You want to make sure you understand the themes, ideas, etc.

You want to simulate OTB tournament conditions as much as possible.

Realize, and understand that mistakes will happen.  They are part of the learning process.

Study what is appropriate for your skill level.  What i see that discourages people the most, is having an inflated opinion of their skill level.  So hey start studying things way above what they should.

Do you think it's more appropriate to use a themed book for learning otb? If so can you suggest one for my level?

You can use the lessons here.  That will get you on your way to improving.

One more piece of advice.  Play slow time controls.  Playing blitz, bullet, and rapid, instill bad habits.  You're playing games where you're moving fast, and not allowing yourself time to think.
