It is a win unless, like in your case, you only had a king left so there was no way to win with the material you had left. It would be a draw if you had a bishop for instance. But if you had a rook, you would've won.

Once I was one move away from a checkmate when I realized I was out of time. Man, the message of "White wins due to timeout" in the screen caught me off-guard
