I have heard a lot of differing advice on how to improve at chess. Right now all I am doing is playing lots of 3/2 blitz games. Is there a better way to improve? Thank you to everyone who responds.

play even more blitz

hyperbullet also helps.

Just do a bunch of puzzles, understand openings, use some but not a lot of gambits. Watch some lectures on youtube. Watch games and analyze each move by yourself. For example if some super strong GM sacrifices a pawn think about why he did that (is it for rapid development, better center control, or for another piece later in the game). Use this if you want.https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLXYjOKeyT-KCwK09Bvvxwg/featured?view_as=subscriber

Saw a book by GM Yasser Seirawan recommended on first page. I would second that along with several other of his books, Winning Tactics, Winning Strtegies, and Winning Endings. He also has many many great videos on You Tube, as well.

Play in person for money. It doesn't have to be much. 5$ for example but you'll never want to lose.

I think that playing blitz is inappropriate for a beginner, because it doesn't give you enough time to think. If you want to improve then train tactics every day.

Dear Chessfriend,

My name is Gabor Balazs. I am a Hungarian FM, fighting for the IM title. My top ELO is 2435. I have been playing chess for 21 years. I won the Hungarian Rapid Championship twice (U16 and U18).

I love teaching chess and it is very important for me that both of us enjoy the lessons beside the hard work. I have pupils almost all the levels from beginners to advanced players (1100-2200 ELO).

Why should you choose me?

- I have a widespread opening repertoire (a lot of openings are analysed by strong Grand Masters).

- I have a lot of chess books in PDF and Chessbase format, so I can teach you the main middlegame plans, the art of calculations, famous chess games and the endgame theory.

- I have elaborated, personalized training plans, which help you to improve your skills effectively.

- I help you analyse your games deeply, so you can realise your mistakes and learn from them.

- I am really flexible and hard-working person, the quality of my work is really important for me.

Please, contact me (balazsgabor1991@gmail.com), if you are interested in working with me, I am looking forward to your message.
