Tips on openings

Hey guys, I’m looking for some tips on openings apart from the famous E4. Any pointers?

Here's what I suggest as a fellow beginner, besides lessons, opening explorer and watching games...

1- Pick a couple of openings (if you're into e4, you have a lot to choose from) and play around and then check with the opening explorer if your moves are reasonable. If they are, think of that opening as a viable candidate for your repertoire. If not, put off learning that opening.

2- Once you've identified a books of openings your natural instincts help you with (that is to say, you naturally gravitate towards good "theoretical" moves), look at instructive games with that opening from beginning to end. Look for the plans and strategic motifs.

3- Learn the strategic motifs and general plans. Play the opening a lot. Repeat.

4- In the future (maybe not so distant), look at the typical pawn structures you get in those games. Try to understand those structures and how to aim for them if they are favorable.

5- Play some more and forget about openings for a while. Enjoy the process!

First of all, the most important thing for a beginner is to follow opening principles. Apart form that, pick some mainstream opening and learn first 3-5 moves. Just go from there. Don't memorize exact lines because as a beginner, you opponents will not really play main theory.

If you have the time for reading, here is most of what you need to know for now about openings:
