tournaments for dummy’s - how to they work

So dipped my toe into the world of tournaments. Totally confused. Fast and furious and every game in beaten on timeout despite being up on points on most games. You can’t win in 40 secs so how does it work. I’ve read the articles on the app but I’m none the wiser. Can you please enlighten me ? TIA
Probably you stumbled into a bullet tournament, but it is hard to figure out exactly. There are many tournaments with different time controls.
Bullet is a format where you have very little time. (The most classic version is 60 seconds for the entire game, no increment). So you have to play fast. Really fast.
My advice is don't play bullet until you are reasonably okay at chess.
Bullet chess will stunt ur chess growth. U won't improve playing bullet.
