Weak Square concept

Hi

I was reading this book " Weapons of chess".  And in one of the chapters,  in this position  it is written that a6,a5,b5,c6,d5,f5,f6, h5 and h6 are weak squares for black. This is because they can never be guarded by pawns.

But, why not b6, d6, e6 are mentioned? Aren't they weak?

Positional chess chapter-Page 240

Thanks, Bharat

hmm, will think about this

Maybe because although they are not currently guarded by pawns, they are still under the protection of the queen and bishop. Well b6 and d6 are,e6 is actually guarded by a pawn.

But a6 and a5 are under rook protection. And pawn itself is at a5, so i am not sure.. Yes, e6 is guarded by pawn(my bad). But b6 and d6? Unable to understand

Hmm yeah you're right I didn't bother comparing at first, a6 is actually defended by bishop, knight and rook so now I'm stumped lol. Maybe a5 is considered weak because it's isolated.

You are correct.

I think the specific squares mentioned are pointed out because they are squares that White can immediately act to exploit. The other squares you mentioned may be technically weak, but their strength or weakness is moot in the given position.
