What books would you recommend I read?

As a beginner, sub-1000 player what chess book would you recommend I read? I’ve heard that a lot of chess books such as Bobby Fischer’s book is too focused on endgame mates or specific moves, and I’ve read complaints it doesn’t help beginners.

Any suggestions?
