I'm 1050 but I can beat 1300's, am I beginner or intermediate?
What Elo is beginner
why do so many people ask these types of questions, just play the game regardless of your ability
Because many people like to have a distinct, obvious and external measure to the question "am I better than before?". That's why things like achievements, gamification and belt systems in martial arts work; while some can enjoy an activity in itself and don't need any motivation, others can need some motivation and encouragement. And since most beginners are playing online now instead of a club or at school, they can't really use the good old "I win more and lose less against my friend".
I started 23 days ago, fell to around 200 then went up to 400 where I am now. Hopefully I can continue learning this masterpiece of a game and one day reach 800 as a modest goal.
9 days ago I was 400 elo.

10 days ago I was 400 elo, now I am at 800. I met my goal!
I'm going to vote that beginner is under 500.
That's an official otb tournament rating. Just disregard online ratings.
i am a beginner
Definitely
i joined a month ago
I have a trash profile picture
My Elo peaked at 1114 and then dropped all the way to 600.
My Elo is only 760.
I think less than 1100, personally I think that by now you already know some theories and it's up to each one to play with their criteria in the middle of the game
0-600 beginner 600-1000 casual/advanced beginner 1000-1300 learning the ropes 1300-1600 intermediate 1600-1800 intermediate grade 2 1800-2000 advanced 2000-2200 expert 2200+ master or candidate master+

Don't stop now, in another year, you'll be 256,000!
Beginners don’t get elo, they just get rating XD
No one gets an Elo rating from chess.com. You get a Glicko rating.
Everyone has their own definition of a beginner.
My definition: a player is a beginner as long as he does beginner things.
Sometimes I can find good tactical combinations, but more often I can’t see a trivial pin or discovery; sometimes I can play with good accuracy an endgame, but in one in three games I gift a piece. So, I definitely am a beginner. I’ll consider myself ad intermediate when I stop making these stupid mistakes.
Rating online says little, even because it varies a lot from server to server ( here I have 1050, in another 1600 ). It’s a push to improve, a measure of your progress.
Problem is that most used words for low rated players have more than one meaning. Beginner is someone who has just began playing chess. But if after playing for ten years I still play with exactly same strength, am I still beginner or just a low rated player? And how do we measure time when one stops being a beginner, is at weeks since start or hours of play? Because we have som beginners who have played 100 - 200 games, 0 lessons, 0 puzzle in one year time and then some who played 1000 games, 100 lessons, 2000 puzzles in one month, who is the beginner here? Some people think that after some time they automatically stop being beginners and therefore should have higher rating.
Same with amateur and hobbyist as terminology. As long as you don't get paid, you are an amateur even if a lot of people love to use it as an insult. And hobbyist doesn't even have a good definition, I would use it for anything you spend a little or a lot of time on as long as it is not your main occupation. Maybe casual is a good word for people who just play for fun without trying to get better at this specific board game.
