When an opposing pawn attempts to avoid capture by stepping forward 2 spaces, en passant(literally ‘while spending’ or ‘while passing’ in French) can be performed. This is where the pawn captures the opposing one as if the opposing pawn only moved one square, and then goes to that square. Essentially, capturing behind.
