What is it called when a player is playing like a dick?

Say you’re playing chess, and instead of exchanging pieces so you’re both equal at the end of the exchange, the other player moves their piece to a, neutral, position. Now you have to think of a new line where you can exchange pieces so that either (1) it’s equal after the exchange, or (2) you come out a piece up or in a better position at the end of the exchange.

And then they do it again, so now instead of playing chess, you’re chasing their pieces across the board.

I think you might be missing something. Just because pieces you are trying to trade have equal value does not mean it's a good idea to trade. Let's think of some examples.

Let's say the position is wide open - the pawns in the center have been traded off. You are targeting the opponent's bishop with your knight. Of course your opponent won't want to trade that bishop off because open positions favor bishops. They are able to snipe pieces from across the board. Maybe the opposite is true. Instead of an open position, it's a gridlock and the pawns aren't budging. The bishops are trapped behind the pawns, shut out of the game. The knights would be really valuable since they can jump around. Much more so than the bishops.

Other situations. Let's say there is only one open file and your opponent has already claimed control of it with their rook protected by their other rook. You move one of your rooks to the file looking to trade. Well of course they wouldn't initiate the trade, because at the end of the trade you would be controlling that file, and how does that help them?

If you or your opponent doesn't think a trade is good for them and rejects it, well, that's just called playing chess. And blindly trading without thinking is not the way to become a better chess player.

Since when is chess a cooperative game? Either their moves are good/neutral (in which case you have no beef) or bad (in which case it is on you to punish them).

DON'T chase his pieces around the board begging for exchanges.

Instead, put your own pieces in strong, protected positions... so that YOUR Knight is better than HIS Knight, YOUR Rook is better than HIS Rook, and so on.

Then HE is the one who has to come to YOU begging for exchanges.
