What Mindset to have in a chess game?

Ok, I am a some what begginner, and I struggle in the begginning... I have been told my view and tactics are not the best. I usually see my games with the intention to take. What else do I need to see?

I was usually told back then to look at the entire board, not to see it in tunnel vision. Basically, don't focus on one area 'cause your opponent has his own plans too
