Welcome to chess community!

I hope you will find the positions and move sequence beautiful once you keep playing.

I ll quickly mention what ya should do if you are a beginner.

  1. Keep pieces in center unless it is must to keep them at corners.
  2. Castle by max move number 10
  3. If you see a weak pawn, the pawn which is not well defended. Keep building pressure on it.
  4. Exchange pieces when up in material
  5. Avoid exchanging queens when you are attacking the opponents king.
  6. Try to analyse your games hy using lichess or chesscom to see why your move was wrong.

Goodluck!

Thank you for the advise! I'll have to remember to castle. My initial thought was that it was bad because I would be putting my king in a corner (assuming getting cornered is bad). I guess you would want to leave pieces near it to protect it?

Yes leave some troops/pieces to keep it protected. And putting king in corner is safe because a king will not come in on going war, king arrives once the dust is settled, in endgame, when both players are left with lesser pieces. Also be very very careful when you touch the pawns in front of the king. Push the pawns only when forced, you will get to learn it quickly

Ok that makes sense. Keep the pawns there to defend the king. Thanks for taking the time to explain and the advice!
