Play longer time control like 15'10 and try to develop a strong opening repertoire. Then go back playing blitz that's what I do.
P.S 10 min blitz is actually pretty long in my opinion.
why am I so bad at blitz?

I usually play 10 min time controls in blitz, but I can't seem to win. I start out well every match, but every time I make blunder after blunder and get checkmated or I just resign. It's almost scary on how I can lose all of my advantage in like 4~5 moves. If I was terrible at chess I would have understood, but I'm reletively ok at daily chess - about 1300~1400. I feel like my blitz rating is much lower than what I can do. How can I get better at blitz?
You aren't bad. You are just getting started and you haven't played much.

I take a 2 hour examination but come half an hour hour late.
I start out the questions well, but every time I make blunder after blunder (due to "time trouble") and get "checkmated" or just "resign" (I am unable to finish the questions in time).
Next time, I would come to the examination venue ahead of time.
So next time, you will need to play longer time controls of perhaps 15|10.
Blitz is tactics-heavy. Lots of patterns are observed. You need to be comfortable playing any position because you need to play quickly in a given time. Unlike long games, you cannot expect to utilise the same amount of time to make moves. As the clock is ticking, not only your have less time to play, but your playing focus and ability also get hampered because of panicking due to time trouble.
You will need to train up on tactics and endgame skills (and make good moves fast) to play blitz.
For me, I have suffered into thousands of blitz and rapid losses in over-the-board and online games over the past years, but gained some experience to understand how blitz works.

Generally playing blitz means relying more heavily on experience rather than chess talent or skill.
Play slow games. Trust me. Those are the games you learn lot's in. Also play 30min, as it's important to feel some pressure of the clock sometimes.

Try this. Playing1chess5methods108

Yes, blitz is tough because many people focus on it so much. @ljy7485, you haven’t played that many games yet, so don’t worry so much. When I started, I dropped to 700 in blitz. Then, I focused a lot on daily games and tactics: and improved to 1100. Now I am 1600+ going for 1700. Improvement comes slowly, just keep on playing!!
And play slower games too, but other people have mentioned that already. As I said, I played daily.

I say it is a lot of practice- practise playing blitz separately, it can be considered a totally different game- and quick pattern recognition. You need a good instinct and quick calculation if ever a complicated position occurs; make sure you aren't distracted.
Don't worry, some people are better at some controls than others. I'm better at faster time controls, and I have a friend who cannot play for the life of them. Everybody's different, and maybe slower chess is where you're at.

I think to be proficient at blitz requires a good amount of knowledge on opening theory. That way, for your first several moves, you are able to spend a minimal amount of time making solid moves if you have the theory behind them memorized.

You played with lightning and survived???

Treat the practice games like pre-test prep, but with similar environment. when you get more comfortable in these situations, the real test (live games) you’ll be more confident. Good Luck!
