why chess? and when why, how to chess?

good evening fellow chess players, and hello to chess players new!

best of luck in your games, and if in between your next game, do you sharing some thoughts on this question: "what is the point of chess? how should one play?"

i recently played a game with someone, and after the match (we drew with kings, pawns and their bishop left in play), they asked me what the point of chess was? is it to capture all the pieces? is it to play with style? do you have to only capture the king?

now, as familiar with chess as i am, i did my best to respond in a way that followed these keys:

1. capture the king

2. do that however you can

3. DO THAT, within what the rules says you can do

4. the rules are, move the pieces and capture the opposing king

5. horses jump in an "L" pattern

6. kings can castle for better protection, as long as unthreatened

7. pawns can move twice at first, but once afterwards

8. pawns capture diagonally, and when confronted with an "obstacle," must wait until either a capture or a clearing

9. the en passant

10. ... (if i forgot any rules, let me know)

so this was the gist of how i responded to their chess question, and its not the first time i've give this response when asked about chess play. this time however, it got me thinking about the why and how of playing chess (i've been caught up with the when, where and what about chess). on that note, chess really is a box that gets you thinking outside the box. back to this note, to the experienced players reading this, how did i do in my "chess explanation?" and i can summarize the above further: "to capture the opposing king(player) by any means. however, those means must follow the rules(piece movement/behavior)."

how does that sound as a response, "what is the purpose of chess/ how do you play chess/ why should you play chess?" ... for that last one, that sounds like it could make an interesting thread in itself! i'll save that one for late, but hopefully, you get the idea? happy.png

to the beginners of chess, however "beginning" you are, if i may ask you a similar question: "what is the point of playing chess?" Or, "how do you play chess?" (notice there is a second question there, "how do you play chess?" what i was asking though, was the You(capitol you), you. get what im saying wink.png) and lastly, "why should i play chess?" (asking from the perspective of someone who is interested in/has heard of chess)

best of luck in your games!! and thanks for your ideas!!!

take care, and good night!

I prefer the second response/summary, "To capture the opposing King by any means, however, those means must follow the rules (piece movement, behaviour)". The problem is would that be enough explanation for a beginner? I've been playing chess for many years but as a beginner it can be confusing, even more so when talking about things like en passant, perpetual check, stalemate, etc. Interesting read and some of those questions would probably make a whole book or two alone.
