Why do some people play obnoxiously fast in a 30-minute game (and often still defeat me)?

I suck. Because im ADD. There are times when I am calm and my thoughts are clear and that's the time to play. Most of the time I am not I'm in a hurry and that is not the time to play. Without fail if somebody comes in or calls me that tends to blow a game for me that I had won. Because of this I get quite aggravated when people take too long to move on what should be simple moves..... Like they take 2 minutes on a second opening move

What I'm saying is..... The longer your opponent takes the more it breaks the train of thought for people that play fast and have ADD. The more mistakes they make. I see it in my own play and frustrates me.

@tinmatic - I know you felt compelled to move quickly because your opponent played quickly, but you should be doing the opposite. You know what really annoys people who play fast? People who play slowly. I remember when I played OTB, there were some players who just moved right away even in classical and they would just sit and stare, tapping their foot, and getting mad that you didn't move. It's at this point you should just smile, laugh at the person on the inside, and just start torturing them. Sometimes I would just go like I was about to make a move, reach for a piece, then pull back suddenly and start thinking again. Hilarity ensued. There's a lot of psychology in chess and you should use that to your advantage.

I highly doubt he is grinding for trophies. He is just doing content for viewers probably.

In some cases, your opponents play fast and think of their subsequent moves ahead on your time while you slowly calculate moves. In other words, they actually calculate moves, but not using their time.

Also, it's not mandatory for someone to "take their time" in a long game. It's up to them.

Furthermore, we cannot directly equate "longer thinking time" to "winning the game". It does not work that way all the time even though the general consensus is that longer thinking time usually translates to better quality moves. In other words, In other words, we cannot assume that the player who takes their time is guaranteed to win.

"Doctor" in general encompasses many fields.

The same goes for "soap", where its scientific definition goes beyond toilet soaps and kitchen soaps.

I know what you mean, Tinmanic. At the end of the day, you can take as much time or little as you like. It is intimidating when faced with an opponent that gives the impression they know exactly what moves to play, simply because they're playing fast. I would say that a good number of them will blunder because they don't know what they're doing. Its a tactic that you can overcome by just realising that's all it is, a tactic. What gets me is when people pressure you to play faster in the chat. I've had that a few times. So satisfying to win against someone like that! I guess some people play fast to try aim for shorter rapid games too, like aiming for 20min games but play 30min rapid until they're more confident.

I used to play OTB and some people really act weird. I had one guy stand up as he thought he was winning, I reached for a piece and then I pretended to see that it blunders a pawn as I already touched the piece. He quickly took the pawn(somewhat slamming the piece) or whatever and lost to a fork in an endgame. This while several people were watching since their games finished already.

I always tried to act as courteous as possible even though some people do weird things to gain an advantage. I'd point out if my opponent forgot to start my clock or something but others would just sit there and pretend not to know if I didn't. I find it funny... like people thinking that 1-2 min is going to win them a 30m-60min game when they are just not that great.

Yes, I always point out a clock error. Then I will do it again, with a warning that I won't do it a third time.

im playing a rapid, but the person takes sooooooooo much time with his choices. whats the point of playing rapid, if you take a longggggg time

If your opponent wastes their time... why cry about it. You clearly don't have the patience for that time control so play a faster one.

some people just need less time to think, and some don't like bullet/blitz chess

i personally play with 10-30 minute time controls on occasion since i like being able to make fast moves without having to worry about losing on time
