Why do you have to pay just to get good at chess?!

I swear, every single tool is locked behind a paywall for no reason!

You want game review? LOCKED BEHIND A PAYWALL.

You want insights? LOCKED BEHIND A PAYWALL.

You want basic coaching? LOCKED BEHIND A PAYWALL.

You want puzzles?! LOCKED. BEHIND. A. PAYWALL!

My entire family is broke, and I've been doing literally EVERYTHING I CAN, looking frantically for free coaching, Doing every free lesson available as soon as i can get through the extremely long wait because it's LOCKED BEHIND A PAYWALL, puzzle rushes every day, learning every tactic I could, going on very long time controls to think very long, literally posting an entire other forum just to ask for tips...

But no matter what I do, I'm just not able to get past 700, ALL BECAUSE I'M NOT ABLE TO GIVE AWAY SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS. WHY?!?!?!?!

I am waiting for someone to say that there are free areas. Game review is daily no problem with that and you have analysis which is good enough unless you are too lazy to do it. Who cares about insights. What will you learn there? You don’t need coaching just analysis. Puzzles are freee on Lichess why does bro not know that, that’s crazy. Honestly youtube is what you need only. The “Remote chess accademy” is enough to teach you how to stop blundering, how to do positional play, how to attack, openings, endgames. Endgames 101 is what I recommend and just search up opening on google. I wonder how I got to 1200 without membership. Hmm..

Do you want to join our club called Chess Fighter? In our club we will get to learn more about chess, play against other clubs and against each other. You can create forums for entertainment because I am bored. Just tell me if you joined so that I can accept your invite.

Try lichess for learning. It gives you everything you’re complaining about for free. Although chess.com is cleaner. I like to study in lichess and play in chess.com

first of all, gold membership is much cheaper and lets you do unlimited puzzles, unlimited lessons and all the bots. Then, like josh said lichess lets you do unlimited puzzles a day, so just make an account on there. Remote chess academy, gothamchess, hikaru, and hundreds of other chess channels give you every aspect of knowledge about the game. and chess.com, lichess and plenty of other sites have engines you can use for analysis and other prep. I managed to get well over 1200 before i got coaching, and if you go to chess tournaments it easily pays back since you can win money

Game review, Insights and "Basic coaching" are just a joke. You should not want any of these. And there is engine analysis for free. Or you can download Stockfish for free.

Puzzles: you have 3 free per day (and even 5 for old accounts). Plus puzzle rush. That's not nothing. You, for example, have done barely 1 per day on average.

In general, there's more free chess material on the Internet than any human can consume in a dozen lifetimes.

It's definitely frustrating to feel like your progress is blocked, but you can absolutely break through the 700 Elo range without spending any money.

I did it. You can too.

I’ve never paid for anything except for a $2 book at a book fair.

I’ve gone from 200 blitz to 1600 rapid.

There are plenty of resources out there for free! And the most important is playing! By playing the game, you should start to recognize patterns and get better at recognizing hanging pieces and pawns.

You say you can’t get past 700, so you’re still in the beginner range, and the number 1 way to gain practically free elo is to play, play, play!

You can’t teach board visualization or spotting hanging pieces. Not with a million puzzles. Not with the best online lessons. Not with the most expensive coach.

It all comes with playing and adapting. Trust me, playing develops skill you can’t get anywhere else.

And there are plenty of resources out there for free! YouTube videos, pdfs, forums to discuss different topics, you name it!

And for people who complain about only 1 game review, let me say this: what are you really getting out of it? It’s just an ego inflater that gives you very little valuable information. If you want to see how you did and get something out of it, self-analyze your own games! You can annotate them with your thoughts and reflections, and store them in a library for later! I’ll end this with two examples of mine:

On lichess.com are free puzzles and there you can get a bit different, but free analysis

wintrchess.com is an website where you can analyse the game just like in chess.com, there are also various different websites like that, e.g. chesscompass.com

Also, there are some free websites where you can get free insights, like chessinsights.xyz

I've been playing chess for more than 50 years and have never paid for chess lessons; either on the Internet or in person.

So if I want to get good at chess I'll need to pay?

No thanks. I'll just remain bad ... Chess.com rating 2351.

If you want to be spoon-fed then yes, that might cost money. Servants are expensive. But if you are willing to do the leg-work yourself, then why would it cost you anything?

Experience by playing will make you better.

Of course, just like literally everyone else who posts asking why they can’t get past a certain rating, it’s all because OP plays too fast and finishes 15/10 games with as much or more time on the clock than they start with. You will always be underrated until you slow down and actually start thinking about your moves and your opponent’s. You can’t try to keep up with everyone on the clock, because the vast majority of players on this site play way too fast and are underrated because of it. Player much more slowly, then you’ll get to your real rating and can figure out what you need to work on.

YouTube has a lot of good chess tutorials.

Alternatively, you could be born with the ability to learn fast. I once had a friend who got to 1300 in a year self-taught. He blocked me for seemingly no reason, though.

In my opinion game review is only useful for making me feel like a genius for doing a brilliant move. Besides ego feeding it doesn’t do much for me
