Why is it putting my rating so high?

I’m a total noob at chess and I downloaded this app literally yesterday. However, it put my rating at 1200 (though it has been steadily declining because I’ve lost every game so far). Why did it do this to me and can I fix it?

I think I’m just going to lose until I start winning.

That's how you fix it.

When I first started an account, I got a few beginner's luck wins and that blew my rating to 1100 or so. Then it dropped to 500 until it settles to what I guess is my actual rating, which is currently around 590-ish.

I think you should just ignore the rating until you have a couple dozens or so rated games. There's enough random blunders by players around 1200 that even below average players can sometimes win a lucky match or two and misled the system to rate you higher/lower than you should be.

I noticed that in your first few rated matches, you win/lose more rating points per game than with later games. I guess this is some sort of simulated annealing designed so that very strong new users can quickly climb up the leaderboard without having to play hundreds or so games that is well below their real skill level while the system tries to figure out where to place the player.

yup. that's the glicko rd rating system, used by a lot of online chess sites. your first few games make your rating fly all over the place, but over time it'll start to settle down.

When you make your account you can select just started (i think) beginner, novice intermediate, expert, or master. Thats why one is like 600 ones 800, 1200, 1600, 2000 something like that roughly I cant remember exactly no one wants to talk about it because they know its slightly cheating as they can just cheat the first couple of games lol and then hold on for dear life in a slightly higher place holder

yeah, also the default is 1200 so I think if you just don't pick one it just automatically does it at 1200 (Although most people aren't actually as good as 1200)
