Why is this a draw ? (stalemate)

Hi,

I'm just beginning chess and it seems strange to me that this was a draw for stalemate :

It confuses me, with 2 queens, a knight, and a bishop it would have been impossible for me to corner the king ?

hoo.. now I understand, he has no possible legal move

Thats why in this exact position below, you don't promote to a queen!

Black forces white to stalemate him and gets the draw! But promoting to a rook still threatens mate and the winning of the rook, so it still wins!

Here's how to go about a king and rook vs king endgame btw:

If he is an entirely new player (he has really only played for three days as his account suggests), this checkmate is likely too advanced for them.

.

Most stalemates which you will normally encounter involve diagonals being covered - and in your position, it is no different, with some diagonals covered by a queen and that bishop.

On your path to cornering the king, always ensure that the king first has room to move. Also bear in mind: the more the number of pieces you have on the board, the greater the likelihood of stalemate.
