I sacked my rook and checkmated 6 moves later because of it. I’m new to chess so just wondering about what makes a brilliant move

You had already been several steps from checkmating Skynet before you gave up the rook

While the brilliant move is a piece sacrifice which divides your opponent's life in before and after:

A brilliant move is a hard move for the engine to spot, or a sacrifice that involves winning material or forced checkmate. You had a better option ,so it was not brilliant.
