g4 and f4 were mostly ways to obscure and muddy the position,  My FIDE rating is many hundreds of points higher than his chess.com rating so I just wanted to get him further and further out of book and make it a fight.  I also wanted to clear the third rank for my heavy pieces,  get space and march my king up in some lines.  Bh6 was to control f8 ,  I didn't want him putting a rook there and sometimes I wanted to take a knight and undermine light squares.  I actually expected black to go queen side this game but the center was blocked.  Oh,  and g4 lets me fianchetto my bishop

g4, and h4, you mean. How high is your FIDE rating? I'd love to challenge you to a game happy.png I would probably have just castled, instead of g4, since it opens up the long diagonal, and makes b6 a good move, instead of a mistake, on Black's part, although, if you are hundreds of points higher than his rating, I guess I'm not one to speak 😅

Kf1 was intentional,  I didn't want my king on the G file yet  and I wanted to free the e1 square

What I was thinking was that when you castled, you could maybe go f4-f5, or bring a rook to the centre

There are a lot of plans I could have tried,  I go out of my way to be weird when I play,  I believe there is a lot of equity in that,  especially against people who aren't active pros and I play more to fight than to win or improve.

lol, ok happy.png

This is the next game to finish,  wanna give it a go?  It gives a better illustration of what I mean by being weird but scrappy,  computer thinks I made 2 mistakes and 2 blunders and probably thought I was dead lost once or twice but I wonder how someone would try to prove that.  It said "Nice comeback win!"

Sure happy.png Would it be possible for me to analyze this tomorrow? I have some homework I need to get done, but just by looking at your game, I can see what you meant by "weird but scrappy" -- how'd your King end up there? xDD

I wanted my king on c3 because it looked like a safe and active square

Haha, this actually reminds me of Caruana-Vachier-Lagrave in the 2014 Sinquefield Cup -- except your King was actually pretty well placed on that square, while MVL's.......wasn't.

Also, have you heard of Nigel Short's matches against (supposedly) Bobby Fischer? xDD

I memorized all of Caruna, Short,  MVL and Fischer's games as well as all sorts of "What ifs" that could have happened in possible variations.  I also memorized all of my candidate moves / variations for those games,  if I were playing them,  some of which are rather embarrassing in hindsight.

Just a random question, have you watched the movie/series The Matrix?

Hi, first of all, were you White or Black? And by "playing for a week", do you mean seriously studying and playing, since your account has been open since 2014. Also, if you won this game, it would be a lot more instructive for me to analyze a game that you lost, so you can not make the same mistakes the next time

I was playing white. And yeah I’m did make an account back in 2014, but I don’t even remember doing that. I’m sure the extent of my chess knowledge was control the center and piece values. This is the first time I’ve really been working hard to improve, learn and really get into chess.

Hi! I, I'm a senior playing around 1400 and have been playing for around 50 years. I watch videos and do puzzles and would like to know what I should do to improve my ratings. I like to play the Queen's Gambit as white and the French Defense as black. Rather than memorize openings I play for a good pawn structure and piece mobility and to block my oponent as much as possible.  Lately I've come to the conclusion that its best to play for an endgame advantage and try to win in the endgame.  So I would appreciate it if you would go over my games and tell me if you think my ideas are correct and what I should do to improve my rating. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Lada_Niva

It sounds like a interesting offer. I don't know what that rating is. But I think I would like some extra help to improve my games. I'm already studying some openings in the book 'a killer chess opening repertoire'. But I may need some help with endgames and tactics and some other things. I know there are video lessons and interactive lessons. But I don't like them very much. I do more like reading to learn.

Maybe you can help me out? Or give me some advice to help me advance?
