What frustrating problems?
"The long time between when you can't win anymore and when you effectively lose"... (this is what they say) .
And the fact that there are hundred of book which present how to open the game and the tatctics so it is much more about memorisation than about strategy
(again it is what they say, I'm a chess beginner, all I see is that it offer new armies and it seems good)

what exactly is it
The only interesting variant of chess I've ever been interested in outside of 960. Its only 10$ it has a good friends list system with correspondence options so you can easily find games. You have 6 "armies" to choose from and you can (and usually do) win by "invasion" which is crossing into the opponents side of the board with your king without being in check.
