Q1 is wrong. Steinitz won three world championship matches after becoming an American citizen in 1888. The correct answer is (D) 2.

According to Wikipedia (yeah I know not the best resource) the only American World Champions have been Paul Morphy (pre-FIDE) 1858-62, Stienitz 1886-94 and Bobby Fischer 1972-75. It also says that Stienitz came to the USA in 1886 and became a US citizen in 1888 so technically he was world champ while a US citizen from 1888-1894.

So the correct answer is 3.

@bluepawn, the official world champions are generally considered to have started with Steinitz in 1886, so that leaves out Morphy. The first FIDE champion was Botvinnik in 1948.

Not exactly! ;) http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess.pl?tid=80764

Just joking, I'm aware Botvinnik was the first FIDE WC.

Carlsen has lost more than 30 games last year, if you include internet play, and against 12-yr magnus on Play Magnus.

@theron

Yes you are right however that is because according to Wikipedia: "Champions are numbered from Steinitz onwards, because his match against Zukertort was publicly declared as a world championship and generally accepted"

The term "generally accepted" in my mind does not mean an official ranking but is "generally accepted".  I still contend that Paul Morphy was the first American world chess champion even though it's not "generally accepted" Wink

@bluepawn, I would tend to agree, nevertheless to avoid confusion a quiz like this should use the list of "generally accepted" champions, but to avoid confusion 3 should probably not be a possible answer.

Actually America has had two world champions. One of course being

Bobby Fischer, born and raised in the U.S.A.. The other is the first

world champion Wilhelm Steinitz, who became a citizen after winning

the first match with Johannes Zukertort. In fact, the first match was played here in the U.S.A.
