Awesome! :) We should keep it up. I'm working on another puzzle; I should have it done soon. I'm gonna go with what TheronG12 said and do 10 clues. We'll see how that goes.

Ok guys--here goes:

Puzzle #2

(1) There are three pawns on the g-file.

(2) There are no pieces on a1.

(3) The white king is on f6.

(4) Both queens are on the same file.

(5) White has doubled pawns on two files, but black has doubled pawns on only one file.

(6) All the rooks are on the edges of the board.

(7) There are two knights on the second rank.

(8) Black's dark-squared bishop is on g1.

(9) The four center squares are inhabited by pawns.

(10) Both black knights are on dark squares.

I will solve it eventually...

I hope it isn't too hard. If it is, that certainly wasn't my intent! :)

Hey guys, for what it's worth, after a few days, this puzzle was no longer fresh in my memory, so I decided to see if I could solve my own puzzle. I did, and I found a different solution than my originally intended one. So even though this puzzle is difficult, it still has more than one solution. :)

OK, I have to admit defeat. I need another clue or two.

Avatar of ijgeoffrey

Ok. Here's two bonus clues:

(Bonus 1) The squares b4, b5, c4, and c5 are all empty.
(Bonus 2) Both of white's knights defend only one other piece.

So I guess everyone's moved on from this thread? :(

I've not had time for this recently. I'll probably attempt it again later.

Yeah, I get that. I have a life too. :P

Using the original rules (post 1) and my clues (posts 62 and 67) one must construct a diagram like (for example) the one in post 23. Create a totally legal setup, and you win. :)

The original quest was to find if it was even possible to put all the pieces on the board following the original rules. Once we determined that it was indeed possible, I began constructing puzzles. My first puzzle gave several starting pieces, and the goal was to fill the board the rest of the way. That one was solved. My second puzzle is instead based on clues. It is as yet unsolved.

P.S. I'll send a trophy to whoever can solve it first.

No one is solving it?

Avatar of TheronG12

I had a couple more shots at it but didn't get it.

Avatar of ijgeoffrey

There are at least two solutions, and my trophy offer still stands!

Pity that this went inactive, it was fun while it lasted.

bump.

Hopefully ijgeoffrey will remember to post the solutions. I'm dying to know.

Assuming I didn't misplace the files, I should still have the solutions. Are you wanting me to post them? At this point it's been long enough that I really don't mind that no one has solved them.

Here's the two solutions to my puzzle :
