Closet Chess, etc.

There have been a number of "what chess keeps me from..." type posts,

but I think we all play chess when maybe we should be doing something

else.  This post is the " I shouldn't have been playing chess when " or

" I can't believe I..." type post.  Get your closet chess player stories out,

here is mine from work today.

I have been logging in during work lately to make on line game moves, my

latest obsession.  When someone approaches my office I quickly close the

window.  I own the company so no one can give me a hard time, but it

would really set a bad example if word go out that I was sitting at my

desk playing chess.  Here's the rub... There is a rumour going around that

I am watching porn.  I guess the guilty chess look is the same as a guilty

been surfin porn look!

I seem to only want to play a lot the night before a big test.

My gf and I moved a couple of months ago, I ran the moped down the street at like 8am to get some coffee, and I see all these people at the chess club. I'm like..."Hmmm what's all this then." I went over and the club manager is like, "TOURNEY!" and I'm like "ummm....4 games...G90...sure I can fit that in."

So I stuck around and played my first game, I got back to the apartment, where we still hadn't finished moving and she was like, "Where were you? What took so long to get coffee?"

I felt like I'd been sneaking around on her or something, for chess! Not the case, but when I told her I'd be going away for 2 hours at a time instead of helping move it didn't take long for me to call the club and withdraw....

I have to find somewhere local that has coffee, chess, and if acceptable,

cigar smoke.  The local casino does not even allow cigars anymore.

I thought this thread was going to be about using chess to gain the courage to "come out of the closet."   Laughing
