last one isnt the black knight checking the white king :P
draw by insuffient material
last one isnt the black knight checking the white king :P
Yes, but that could be corrected by putting the king on b6
last one isnt the black knight checking the white king :P
thanks:D I've corrected it now.
the full list of insufficent material draws:
K vs K
K vs K & N
K vs K & nB
K & B vs K & sB
(nB means any number of bishops of the same colour and sB means a bishop of the same colour)
to demostrate that the list is complete consider this position
NOTE: the white king could be one square to right and the kings can be swapped over
the black king has two squares that are safe, the square next to it and the square it's on,
if white had 2 pieces that's one piece for each square, so K and two pieces against lone king is not insufficent (the exception being two bishops of the same colour which can't threaten both squares because there opposite colour)
this means is white had more than two a subset of them would be sufficient (with the bishops of the same colour being the exception)
if both players had one piece then the black piece can cover the empty square and the white piece can threaten the other, (the exception being being the bishops on the same colour)
this could be extended to both players having at least one piece.
K vs K & Q and K vs K & R are not insufficient because the rook and the queen can both move orthogonally allowing them to cover both squares
in the case of K vs K neither player can check the other let alone checkmate the other
in the situation when each player has one piece there's another obstacle for determining whether checkmate can be gained
black's (or whichever side is being checked) could block or capture the checking piece or check the enemy king.
when one of them is major piece vs minor piece/major piece, the major piece player/either player, always has a possible check even if the other piece is not blocking its friendly king.
if both are minor here are potential checkmates:
also as long as there at least one pawn on the board the game will never be drawn by insufficient material because of promotion
