Chess came about over 1000 years ago. A King's army was always exclusively male then. The only female would be the Queen. The rest are male.
Was a rook (essentially a tower, I guess) part of the army?

So, what about the pawn? I know, some have called them hermaphrodites.
So, for pawns: he, she, it or they?
they are basically kids having a sack race.
Yes. And when there's someone in front of the kid next to you, you jump in diagonal to capture that person and stay always ahead of the kid to the front of whom you jumped! :)
I figure the pawns are adolescents. The queen and king are the only pieces with clear gender.
What do you mean by that? That adolescents don't have clear gender? Gosh! I'm an adolescent, but I think my gender is quite clear. The evidence is overwhelmingly indicating a tendency to one specific gender. I saw my younger sister since she was a baby, and, even then, her gender was quite clear. So I'm wondering what you mean by that...
Let me assume that there are no genderless peaces and gender change is not permitted. After all, chess is invented centuries back.
As every one agrees that queen is female, and a soldier can become queen, all soldiers are female soldiers. Also, as a soldier can become bishop, knight, or rook and hence, all these pieces are also female.
The only lone male piece is king !! (no soldier can become king)
When all the females kill each other, chess ends just before a male is about to die.. It is so sexist :P
The rooks are Homo Gargantuoso males as depicted in the film
Carry On Screaming.
