A very basic fundamental, but important.
You can use this concept when deciding your game plan, what color of squares to set up your pawns on, which bishop to keep, which of your opponent's bishops to kill, etc.

White is so many bishops up, but those bishops can only see... They can never touch the tantilazing figure with the cross on his head. All black has to do is whisk his king to random squares until the 50-move rule clamps down.
