People said to him that he is one of the least usefull pawns because he is in the corner. He is so sad because of that. One day there is a game on. Black is playing an Italian game. Suddenly the player move the pawn in a2 one square ahead. The pawn is so confused, why do the player move him. Then one day he see the same position whitout he being played, he realized that the player before is trying to make the other player can't play the fried liver attack. Then he thinks, maybe he is usefull all this time but he just don't realize it. Then he start to thinks all the things he can done. Now he is proud about being himself and his position.

HOWEVER...

One day, the rook behind him is out on the battlefield and the bishop protecting him has been traded. Both knights valiantly sacrificed themselves to take the enemy queen. It's the endgame now, and the a2 pawn is on his own.

A3

The pawn bravely marches forward to kick an enemy bishop.

A4

The pawn progresses one step forward. Maybe one day he'll promote.

Every pawn dreamed of promotion. Even a2 (though he dreamed of the fried liver more) It was unknown what happened when he got there but he was willing to try.

A5

He was being gassed at by his fellow rook.

What are you doing?

A6

The black rook was getting worried. He made sure he was one step ahead of him so he couldn't progress.

But the pawn didn't notice that

A7

He had hung himself.

The black rook didn't hesitate to take him. He was so close to promotion. It couldn't end like this.

The Pawn, still on a7, had seen his life flash before his eyes. But then, as that life star revived him… He was given a second chance! Everyone was shocked, and now, he had nothing standing between him and the a8 square. His destiny. His dream. He was going to become…
…Wait. What WAS he going to become?
He was just traveling up the board, but he never thought to consider who he wanted to become. Everyone else told him that he should become a Queen. That was his destiny, they said. He’d become the most powerful piece on the board. But, before he stepped onto the a8 square, he stopped to wonder…
…Is becoming a queen, what HE wants?
Did he actually want to be a Queen, or would he rather become something else? And more importantly, if he wanted to become something other than a queen… does he even have a choice? That’s what everyone expects of him. To become a queen, to help the others checkmate the ruthless Black King. What would his fellow pieces say about him if he became a lesser piece? He wouldn’t go all this way to disappoint his family… right?
After a long time, he realized.
Becoming a queen was not what he wanted. He wanted to become something else.
When he was little, his favorite chess piece, besides the pawn, was always the Knight. When he was winning a chess game by a few pawns, he would always promote one into a queen, and his remaining pawns into Knights, just so he could checkmate with his favorite piece on the board.
And now, he had the opportunity to become the same thing.
Why should he let others’ expectations of what he SHOULD become, decide what he WILL become? He could still help his team either way!
And so… with a deep breath, he steps onto the a8 square… and becomes a Knight.
The King is shocked. A pawn that went all that way, to become… a Knight? Nothing more than a minor piece that can’t even checkmate on its own? What a wasted opportunity!
But he saw how happy the new Knight now is. He remembered how, when he forced pawns to become queens in past games, they looked empty and sad. Dissatisfied. And then, it hit him.
Maybe it didn’t matter that the a-pawn didn’t become a queen. Becoming a Knight made the Pawn happy, and after all the work he took to get there… doesn’t he deserve to feel TRULY happy?
After a few moves, the a2 Knight manages to get back to
his family. He’s slow, but he doesn’t have any regrets. He was expecting to be berated by insults and disappointment, but instead, he found that surprisingly, they were all happy for him. Not because he became a queen, but because he became what truly made him happy.
