JDzokic, you ***s*. hahaha
How old was Fischer when he got to NM livel?

Fischer soundly beat the Russian chess machine at the time. You only show your little boy immaturity by calling him a coward. You are probably a chess hack yourself. or perhaps just mentally slow.

I know Russian Grandmasters that have respect for Fischer's life and chess tecknik and ability who would put you in your place for saying such. You are the real coward because you know you can get away with it on a nameless blog knowing the man is dead. How pathetic you are little man.

For those who really want to know, at age 13, Bobby was already rated 1726. It was at this age that he played the Game of the Century against Don Byrne. After he turned 14 in March, that May he already had a rating well over 2200 and was at the Master level. After scoring 10 1/2 out of 13 and winning the U.S. Championship 1957-58, he was given the title of International Master at 14 years old. At age 15 Bobby was awarded the title of Grandmaster. No one else in history has even come close to duplicate his record. He is the greatest chess player who ever lived.

Yes Karjakin holds it, but I was referring to Bobby's overall record. Judit attained it at 15 as well.

im not an expert in chess, but 1700 rated seemed to be way underrated, considering byrne was already GM if im correct. Also didnt Fischer already beat Byrne before that game??

Yes, I was trying to be fair and modest in placing Bobby's Grandmaster title at age 15. But you are correct TetsuoShima, some considered Bobby already at Grandmaster level at 13.

Donald Byrne never became a GM-he only reached IM.
And not only did Kasparov come "close", he smashed Bobby's overall record.

In the 56 Rosenthall, Bobby retained draws against Berstein, Feuerstein and Mednis. I think he drew against Pavey and Shainswit as well. He won against Seidman and Byrne (game of the century). Some believe his game in this Rosenthall acheived him Grandmaster standing already.

are you kidding? 3 matches a hundred games to become wc compared with bobby fischer dominating spassky???

I only ask that in assessing Fischer's abilities that one be fair. You "JD" from serbia with a rating of below 1700 should be gracious enough to realize this. I do not think the calling Fischer a coward after the man is dead is acceptable in the chess world. I hope you do not join the pathetic little man who did so.

Would Fischer Definitly have beaten Karpov? Who can say?
Karpov was head and shoulders over everybody else in the world, and proved it repeatedly with first place finishes in tournament after tournament.
He wan't like Anand, who generally finishes somewhere in the middle most tounaments. Anatoly was the man to beat.
If he couldn't beat Bobby, he certainly would have made a much better showing than Spassky did.

I never said that Don Byrne was a Grandmaster. Please take the time to read my posts carefully. I only posted that some considered him at GM level after playing in the 56 Rosenthall. Are the people in this blog for real.

If Fischer hadn't backed out of chess, he might have gone on to have the greatest career ever. Since he did, Kasparov has the better track record, being more dominant for a longer period of time. Fischer may have had more talent than Kasparov, but there is no proof that he could have done what Kasparov did. That's all I'm saying.

Bobby called America much worse after 9/11.
He threw all his respect-after-death rights in thrash that day.
Rot in hell, Bobby Fischer.

I never said you did. TetsuoShima said that.

Wasn't this thread just trying to find the age when Fischer became NM? If one wants to demonize/idolize Fischer, there's probably a thread to discuss such a controversial player elsewhere.

Yes varelse1, I tend to agree somewhat with you. Whether a player can be considered the "better" player by only one win may be more speculation than truth. Bobby was able to soundly beat Spassky 12 1/2 to 8 1/2 in the World Championship. This is record and truth, uncontestable. Let me just say that after the win, the "Russian" world at the time tried to save face from the loss by intentionally disdaining Spassky's abilities, a typically Soviet maneuver to say the least. Spassky earned his way to the top and the right to play Fischer even though some say the "Soviet" chess machine gave Spassky a little help up the ranks.
Imagine if Fischer was not such a coward and defended his title and continued to be active in Tournament Play and somehow stabilized his personality and antics. For sure, he would have remained champion until the mid-80s or even 90's. Instead of those Karpov-Kasparov matches, it could have been Fischer-Kasparov. What Great Chess the world missed!
