The Barry Quarks draw with Crowns
Tuesday, 10 January 2017 By GEM Community Correspondent in Other Sports
The first week of the new year produced only one match for the Barry Chess Club.
In division 3 the Quarks made the short journey to take on promotion hopefuls the Cardiff Crowns.
The Crowns have only lost two games all season while all we could muster was one win from our opening seven matches.
We were, however, able to utilise Rhys Steele who was still on his winter break from studying at Oxford.
Rhys had already played four games since early December, winning all of them. His good form continued as he won his match on top board.
John Stephenson also won his match on board 4, so the game was all square with the match between Ed Mason and Martin Ricketts to be completed.
The first time control had passed and with both players running out of time Martin hopefully offered a draw.
Ed had a better position and slightly more time but seemed happy to accept a draw, wherupon Joe Fathallah asked incredulously why Ed had taken the draw and proceeded to show how he had a win in three moves!
It just goes to prove why Joe has a rating of over 2000 and Ed and Martin are both in the 1400s.
Still a draw was a good result for the Quarks. It doesn’t move us out of the bottom three but we are slowly creeping up on the teams above us. We remain on 17.5 points and 3.5 points below the Nelson Griffins.
We still have a game in hand and should we win then we would be on target to possibly avoid relegation as we need approximately 41 points to stay up - how we can find five games to win remains to be seen.
The Barry Chess Club meets at 7.30pm each Monday at the West End Club. St. Nicholas Road, Barry CF62 6QY. The club is open to players of all standards; whether you are interested in playing competitive chess or just the occasional friendly games.
New players are very welcome to just turn up on the night but if you contact one of the club members through the website we can explain what is happening on the night you have in mind, and arrange for someone to greet you on your arrival.

/ Please post the score of the last game drawn so that we can see how obvious the win was. (I looked but did not see it in the links provided.)
...for lambasting @recipe4grandeur for accepting a draw in a winning position
