HI, Grandbrother, three scans from reference books, The Batford Chess Encyclopedia by Nathan Divinsky, The even more complete chess addict by Mike Fox and Richard James  and the Oxford Companion to Chess by David Hooper and Kenneth Whyld.

It gives you a beginning of your list with picture movies, films and cinema information.  Please react when I can help you any further !

I have been off work ill for a couple of days so I have watched quite a few this week. There is quite an old thread here on chess.com that lists some good ones.

http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/chess-documentaries

I watched all the ones on this list. 'Men Who Would be Kings' was really quite good. It focuses on Washington Square Park and the chess that is played there. Some really good players and odd characters. It was really interesting.

'Kasparov and the Machine' was also very good. It is interesting to see a bit behind the scenes and see what everyone was thinking during the matches. Including lots of interviews with Kasparov and the IBM team responsible for Deep Blue.

This one isn't on the list in that thread, but was also very good -

It is about 2hrs 45mins long and is all about the Kasparov vs Karpov 1990 World Championship games. Plenty of interviews with both, as well as analysing their moves with the players themselves and finding out what they were thinking at the time. The sound quality is a bit rubbish to begin with but improves alot around 5-10mins in so stick with it before deciding it is unwatchable.

And everybody should watch YouTube " Scacchi Clay Stop Motion - Chess Clay Stop Motion " , by Riccardo Crocetta , 1 video, 1:58 minute, already see 1.165.487 times, very special film !

Knight Moves (1992)

An American thriller, muder-mystery taking place at a grandmaster chess tournament.

The documentary Horatio's Drive (about driving across the United States by in the early days of automobiles) has a scene in the beginning with a chess set. The board is oriented incorrectly, of course. See "Getting It Wrong": http://chessskill.blogspot.com/2012/05/getting-it-wrong.html

'The Knights of Brooklyn' wasn't too bad as a chess movie. Ted Danson is a teacher who tries to get his school interested in chess....they win stuff...everyone loves them...and so on.

Just the usualy happy ending type of film but it's alright if you have a little time to kill. I think it is also based on a true story.

Queen to Play. Recent French film (English subs) starring Kevin Kline. Interesting characters, beautiful scenery of Corsica, shows joys and frustrations of learning & competing in chess and following your passion. Great scene where 2 main characters play moves without a chess board.
