Illegal Position Contest!

for some reason i cannot post a board
What works for me is to insert the board and click on Post, Edit, Post.

en passant
The white Bishop can't move to b1 to deliver the initial check in that case. Black would already be in check.

Without the black pawn, would the position be legal?

But the argument that the white bishop can't move to b1 to deliver the initial check would still be correct. So the illegality proof as it stands is incomplete.

If instead of a white pawn on a2, what if it was black?
I believe it would still be illegal, and the proof would be the same as for the original position. To make the position legal by changing a2 without changing any of the black men would take an empty square or a white rook at a2.

@EvinSung that is a cute illegal position. It goes deeper than at first glance.
The white pawn is needed because black could use white's trick straight back at him.
Of course, a white a2 pawn means the light-squared bishop would have no way to get to b1

I missed that. But you need to put the black rook on d6 and add a black pawn on b3 to legally reach the final position with the only difference being the color of the a2 pawn.
