Illegal Position Contest!
this position, but black to move...
RE: #8976
Legal, even with Black to move.
ah congrats you spotted it
lol i thought id just try to trick people
The black bishop left c8 before the white knight got there, in order to be captured at f3, so the knight arrived from d6. Before it reached d6, the black queen had moved to b8 to let Black escape a check by the knight. But after the knight reached c8 and the king returned to e8, the queen was blocked from returning to d8, so the position is illegal.
Legal:
I completely forgot about a capture on h8, my idea was to force h7-h8=n and not give black a legal last move but I didn’t think of a g7 pawn promoting on h8.

I suppose you could put a black pawn on g7, but then there is no try with bK coming from g7.
This is a common trick puzzle, because it appears in a semi-famous book, but is it possible for this position to be reached with white to move?
What if white shuffles the knight to open
