That is correct.
Is this position legal?

And completely accurate by BigDoggProblem as usual. Can't help but wonder if only retrocages pose any real challenge to experienced solvers. :P Which is a shame, since I like reasonably plausible-looking positions.
I'll start sending the solutions by Message so that others can give these a try. These are good intro problems for the genre.
Nah, it's fine. It seems to be a little too tricky for those (most) who haven't seen the usual tricks (cross-captures, weird promotions, counting pawn captures etc) in isolation, let alone all at once. Besides, I don't have many puzzles left in me. Time to read more on the finer points of retros and level up, so to speak.
@chaotic_iak: That's encouraging feedback. It wasn't altogether straightforward but not out of reach either.
Meanwhile, #300: First one legal; 10 captures needed, 16 men missing. I think you can add 1 more black pawn on either a4 or b4 too (but not both.) Second one illegal since 9Q + P is plain impossible.

Based on Remellion's theme
Legal/illegal?
How about with the h5 pawn on h4?
Hopefuly I didn't mess this up

@fancy illegal. The last mo e was exd3 en passant which means that Whiye's last mo? Ceraintly not from d-file because then en passant would have been impossible.ve was d4. White has his bishop on f1 without ways of getting it out so how did White's king get there

The other one is illegal to. No way to get king on e3 and have possibility to do en passant as Black

Hmm....I don't see the difficulty.
Both legal.

Via d1-c1-b2-c3-d3-e3 of course.
