Hey everyone! So I thought it would be fun to brainstorm the diverse array of skills that chess teaches us in life, particularly from an early age. Please feel free to comment!

Here are a few to get us started...

Patience, study, planning, persistence, logical deductive reasoning, projection, vision, sportsmanship, calculation, pattern recognition...

How to play chess.

It teaches you that in every single move you ponder, to think about how to most effectively crush and destroy your opponent.

@ivandh: LOL! yep, it sure does.

@learningthemoves: That's a good summary!

@johnmusacha: that's a good way to visualise it I think. In longer games I also think about how to play my opponents game, and counterattack the plans that I suspect he has.

How to break free from the evil clutches of fate (i.e. the white pieces).

Foresight.

Hindsite.

Other philosophical lessons as well, which I won't list.

Is learning how to play chess a valid "move"? LOL

Learning to deal with the fact that you don't always get what you want (as in you don't always win). Although sometimes the amount of people disconnecting on live chess makes me wonder if this really applies universally.

Yeah and every action, no matter how powerful it seems, does create some sort of weakness in its wake.
