My son, the great composer

How many of you like, or are good at, playing the best moves in crazy positions?

My two-year-old son is developing an interest in the game of Chess. Whether on a real board or on the computer, he loves to move the pieces around, whether the moves are legal or not. He has no understanding of how the pieces are supposed to move according to the rules.

This evening, I was playing a game on my old-fashioned tabletop chess computer. My son came over and wanted to move the pieces around, and I gently asked him not to, because I was in the middle of a game. Soon, however, I relented. I turned the game off, knowing that I could always restore the position later, and I allowed my son to move the pieces around randomly to his heart's content.

While he did so, he uttered several phrases in his sweet, tender voice, like, "This is a good move!" (whether the move was legal or not!), "This goes right here," and "This is a Bishop!"

Below is the position that resulted when my son was finally finished with his rearranging. As you can see, the position is completely surreal, and I have not conducted any analysis whatsoever on this position. How well can you determine the best strategy for both sides? Who can come up with the best continuation for the rest of the game?

Good luck!

Probably taking the en prise black queen checking the king is a good idea

Although taking it with the queen doesn't look inordinately praiseworthy.

Naturally, but what happens after that? Smile

Ask him! lol  He's the one who concocted this labyrinthine nightmare. Smile

@AndyClifton: I think this position is rather beyond his genius at this time. Laughing

He seems to like clogged-up positions and pawn chains.  Maybe he'll be the next Nimzovich. Laughing

I had envisioned people posting some diagrams of how the game would progress, and seeing who could arrive at the best, tidiest conclusion to such a chaotic position. Would anyone like to try?

Even if the best progression might be obvious (which, in this case, certainly begins that way, owing to the White King's position), my hope was that some of us could take interest and develop a discussion and eventually arrive at some sort of definitive conclusion of each position. I intend to post more of these positions when my son creates future works of art. Smile

Moreover, since these positions are created essentially randomly, they will seldom be familiar positions, which, I hope, could help us in thinking outside the box of commonplace chess.

The challenge is submitted, and responses are welcome!

A noble sentiment, no doubt; but it's really tough to begin a position with a queen hang.  I don't think too many will be likely to jump into those waters.

Put the black queen somewhere else and we might yet find the position worthy of interest.

@AndyClifton: That's up to my boy. Smile The positions, as I post them, are recreated exactly (unless the position is illegal for some reason, e.g., both sides are in check, Pawns are on the first or eighth rank, etc., in which case I make the slight, necessary adjustments). In this first position, no adjustment was necessary, so I decided to post it as he designed it.

Since these positions are randomly created by a toddler, I anticipate that many of them may indeed have simpler and more straightforward resolutions than others. My goal was to simply allow that to happen. These "games" are what they are; some will be easy, while others will be more complicated. The resulting assortment of challenges could appeal to various skill levels. Perhaps the easier ones will appeal to a lower-rated crowd, and the tougher ones to those rated higher.

Suit yourself...but nobody exactly seems to be pounding the door down as things stand. Smile

So get the kid working on some more!  C'mon, enough of that eating and naptime freeloading! Laughing

@AndyClifton: If nobody wants to solve or strategize this, or any other, position that my son designs, that is perfectly fine. I won't make any demands on people. Smile If nothing else, hopefully people will be amused by my son's "talents." Either way, it's all good! Smile

By the way, my son will be making future creations, and I will post them when I have time. Last night, though, he eventually started putting some pieces up to his mouth, and I don't want him relearning the bad habit of eating non-foods he had when he was a one-year-old, so I ended the session right there. Tongue Out

You have to explain to your son that his composition is illegal, since Black has made (minimum) seven pawn captures, while white still has all 16 of his men onboard.

Same thing for the white pawns.

@pfren: Excellent observation, naturally. However, I was calling only the most basic violations "illegal," such as those I cited above. I wasn't going to interfere with the position if it was technically illegal but still playable, although perhaps I should reconsider. Smile

To be honest, I did not check the "position" at all. According to the probability theory, if you splat colors randomly onto millions of canvasses, there is always a probability to create something greater than the Mona Lisa.

Wow, pfren beat me to the punch. The pawn capture problem was actually the first thing I noticed about the position.

I don't mean to take away from the coolness factor of your two-year-old learning chess, of course.

I didn't draw attention to the impossibility of the Pawn structures because they simply add to the surreality of the position, which I thought some people might find all the more intriguing.

Unfortunately, if such impossibilities discourage people from even attempting to try the positions, even for amusement, then I may have to adjust the positions quite a bit more in order to make them feasible. We'll see.
