Have fun spending thousands of hours reading, going over your games, and tens of thousands of hours playing games and tactics to become a decent player!

Not to mention that chess is a man's game and your womanly brain requires twice(trice?) as much of the above to equal a typical male player.

true in a way...this isn't like checkers, where you can just learn the rules, play a few times and still give a decent game to just about anybody. The skill gap between absolute beginner and intermediate is just too wide in chess for that.

Becoming even just "decent" in chess is about as difficult as becoming a par player in golf--it takes hundreds or thousands of hours of study, practice and dedication. Certainly not a decision to take lightly...

...and you have to explain to everyone why you're doing this. Just saying, "It's fun", doesn't work after awhileLaughing

Checkers is more complex than many people give credit for. While chess has a reputation for complexity because it is hard to learn, the accessibility of draughts leads many people to think it is as simple as tic-tac-toe, because they never progress beyond that point. But for those who feel like wasting a good chunk of their lives but without the prestige of chess, there are even GM titles for checkers.

Ok folks....Me and my husband are not "married"yet are getting married 12/28.Secondly I am serious about learning chess, this was not some whimsical "womans"decision...so get the "mans game" mentality out of my post...thank you have a nice day.My husband is also on chess.com,I referred him.I am not afraid to learn nor do I get discouraged easily. That being said if you would like to add me to your fl feel free.Have a nice evening

Oy oy! Teary did not intend sexism (that was the other guy!). x_x

I was just making the point that catching up to an intermediate to good level player from scratch can take years of practice. But if you understand what it takes and are willing to give it a go, then that is still great! It is a wonderful and addicting game, so I'm sure that you'll have lots of fun and enjoyment along the way :D

I know it was not you teary....it does amuse me tho, that sexism still rages on.It's laughable actually.

(Now that I've stalked you, I have to actually contribute something to the thread to avoid being rude.)

At what level are you at as far as learning chess? Do you know the rules, basic tactics, strategy, or are you just 100% new to the game?
