If you're Black and White brings his Queen and Bishop out for a quick mate on f7, then no problem. It's easy to defend against and you gain a slight advantage from White wasting time moving his Queen while you are developing pieces.

I used to play in chess tournaments run by my coach who heavily discouraged scholar's mate and didn't let people play it in his tournaments. So then I played in a different tournament and got hit with scholar's mate twice because I forgot it was allowed.

Instead of banning it, what do you do to defend against it

Nah it's not. But I don't want to ban it because if there's ever a player who uses it on me, I'll get a free win.
