Don't we also have to figure out who has a winning record against each other?

Yup. And that's the hard part.

I've been thinking about this, and I suspect the door out is through Fischer, not Steinitz. I can't find a timeline that works throught Steinitz, his neighbours are too far removed.

Yes, you do need to do some research regarding the winning record. There are fortunately many sources, both online and traditional, from which you can get the info. As Rooperi noted, some players never had a chance to play against one another, which makes the exercise easier.

Okay, Marshall had a losing lifetime record against Lasker and Capablanca.

 Hey, great job Goldendog!

Thanks. Very interesting and attractive puzzle.

While I knew who was on top of several matchups in the puzzle, the only pertinent one in the solution that I knew was Geller-Fischer. In fact, I just picked that one and worked backwards to the beginning. The rest was making good guesses and then using wikipedia and megabase.

rooperi

Yeah, well done golden dog. And thanx for these puzzles, crazy :)

There are two other routes one could take, but the one you solved seems most attractive to me. In all three cases, though, one must choose Tartakower.
