Not sure if anyone already played or not. We tried a new type chess game today. Instead of using 3D chess pieces, we used 1 cent penny with one side taped chess piece images. For black side, The other side of the penny was marked a black dot to distinguish from white side.
Each side arranged their pieces at their end two ranks, they could arrange whatever formation they wanted, and flipped their chess pieces so the opponent could not see. When the game started, each one guessed the opponent's chess pieces by how the piece moved around. Obviously if knight moved, the opponent could immediately recognized it was a knight. But could be confused between bishop and queen, or queen and rook. And that's the fun part of the game, one could confuse the opponent, and did not know where the king was. And the game could be really wild.
Because of this type of game, a few rules was changed: 1. Bishops could be at same-color square; 2. No castle, because you could set up your formation as you liked, and you probably already "castled" your king; 3. Since each side might not know which piece was which, if king was under checking, the king might not need move or get protected, because the opponent might not know king was under attack, of course, if opponent happened to take king, the game was immediately over.
I can imagine with online game, the server would make sure each move is legal, and should let player to mark/guess opponent's chess pieces.
