Playing OTB with a well matched opponent, using a beautiful, well weighted and balanced wooden set on a nice board, drinking some good ale (or brandy or bourbon), and listening to Classical music. It doesn't get better than that.

the mental challenge...i have liked puzzles from a young age...at 8 i was doing 500-100 piece puzzles...by 10 i was into chess
