I've never heard of the term "ponds" in relation to chess pieces. I thought "pawn" came from peon, the Latin for foot soldier.

maybe because they cant hear the difference between the two sounds , the two words sound almost alike when spoken one after another , you have to listen carefully to distinguish between the two sounds.
