Carlsen-Anand Match
The recent World Chess Championship was the cause of excitement among most chessplayers. Vishwanathan Anand from India, an ex-world champion, faced Magnus Carlsen, the No.1 ranked player in the world from september 7-september 26. Carlsen Won the match 6 1/2-4 1/2, by winning three games and losing one.Anand can certainly be optimistic about his chances if he progresses to play Magnus again, as he did manage to win one game, unlike last year.
The Preliminary Stage:
The Candidates tournament featured eight players- Anand, Aronian, Kramnik, Karjakin, Svidler, Mamedyarov, and Topalov. In the first round, Anand faced the then No.2 in the world, Levon Aronian.
In Round two, Anand drew, and Aronian won against Mamedyarov. Round three did not produce anything amazing, but round 4 produced an Amazing game between Aronian and Svidler, which I will cover in two weeks.
The French Defense
The French defense is one of the most popular openings on chess.com, and throughout the whole world. In this opening, you need a thourough understanding of all the plans. Today, we will cover the plans of this opening, and later, the theory.'
The Basic Structure:
An illustration if how white attacks on the kingside:
Some plans for black:
Some other plans for black are to play a6-b5 or g5 (!) in some cases.
Warning!!!: If you are planning to play the 3..Nf6 line, (Against Nc3) beware of Bxh7+ sacrifices! one good way to deal with this is to play f6.
A trap you MUST know:
If you think you will start playing the french defense soon, I reccomend John Watson's book, play the french 4th edition. It covers all of the lines in detail, and is a very instructive book.
