This game shows the importance of getting every move, in the right place, never have a plan that doesn't react to your opponents moves. How annoying. also you can see the importance of tempo in this game. so annoyed to lose this game, any thoughts very welcome.

Thanks again

I play this system for white, let me give you my thoughts on the opening phase and early middlegame, since I think white was lost after that point.

  • After 3: ...g6, I don't like 4: c4. The whole point of this system (from my point of view) is for white to play this setup: e4, d4, Nf3, Bd3, Bg5, c3, Nbd2, o-o, Re1, Qc2. Usually black plays d6, e5, g6, Bg7, Nf6, o-o, Re8, h6 to force Bh4, etc. The exact same setup is reached from the King's Indian Attack against the Caro-Kann defense, which is why I know the ideas from (in this case) the white side so well.
  • I'm not so sure I like Bxg7, I think I would prefer gxf3. The dark-squared bishop exchange will happen eventually, white doesn't lose the g2 pawn, and white gets the open g file anyways. Granted, losing a pawn on the non-king side in an opposite-side-castle position may not be a big problem, but if it's all the same I'd rather not lose it. :-)
  • I sort of like the idea behind 14: Be2, but in this particular position I would have preferred 14: f4. The Ne5 is a pretty strong piece, so I don't mind exchanging it for the Bd3. Also, in response to Nxd3+ Qxd3 f5, white can play e5.
  • I don't like 15: o-o-o at all. Black's f4 move completely secures the e5 square for the knight, and black has a significant advantage at this point. The thing is, 15: f4 Nd7 16: e5?! isn't good either because black just takes on e5 and still has the strong knight. This is kind of why I preferred 14: f4, challenging that central knight right away. Remember, black's other knight isn't very well placed.
  • 21: ... Qa3+ was clearly not the right move for black, since he went right back to a5. Basically it let's white back in the game by giving away two free tempi. I'm guessing that a6 was better, or perhaps even b5 right away.
  • After 28: Bc2 Qb6 29: Qxh5+ Kg7 30: Nxf4, it is odd how all of white's pieces are now a part of the attack, all because of the two tempi black gave to white.
  • If you play 30: Qxh5+ black must find Qh6 which defends, because Kg7 allows Bxg6 with some very strong threats.

In the opening white 2.d5!?. I think that 2.c4 is better (2...Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.d4) and now you are King's Indian without bad bishop on d3.
